Living with Wildlife

July 22 2022

Recently a white tail buck has been hanging out at Sundance Beach.  It raises the topic of living with wildlife in our communities.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife recommends the following:

1. Stop feeding the birds. High energy sunflower seeds are very tempting for deer, racoons etc. Birds do not need the extra feed.  They have plenty in their natural habitat. We don’t need to be leaving extra treats out which will attract unwanted visitors.
2. Walk away from wildlife. Give them space.
3. Loud noises usually frighten deer away, but if they charge, back away.
4. If a deer in our village is charging humans we can call the Wildlife Hotline 1-800-642 3800. A wildlife officer may be sent out to investigate.

There's an excellent article on wildlife interactions on the Alberta Government website.
